Introduction to VET Subjects (Vocational Education and Training)

Students in Year 10 have the opportunity to enrol in units of competency that provide an excellent introduction to vocational training for the Hospitality or the Construction Industry.


Introduction to Hospitality

Includes a combination of theory and practical tasks which include workplace safety, teamwork, food preparation and food hygiene. Students will gain skills at school, in an assimilated work environment and participate in a range of industry visits to restaurants, hotels and training providers such as GYC and TAFE. Students will have an opportunity to embark on structured work experience to assist them in gaining hands-on industry experience.

Students will develop skills in:

  • cleaning, kitchen and storage areas,
  • personal hygiene, kitchen hygiene,
  • safe work practices according to WHS principles and procedure
  • food safety, logical and time efficient work flow,
  • attractive arrangement of food.


The following units are offered at Sacred Heart College:

  • SITXFSA005 - Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITXWHS005 - Participate in safe work practices
  • SITHCCC025- Prepare and present sandwiches
  • SITHCCC024 - Prepare and present simple dishes

Completion of these units will contribute to Certificate II in Hospitality SIT20322 if students choose to enrol in the full qualification either at Guilford Young College (RTO No. 1129) or any other Registered Training Organisation in the future.


Introduction to Construction

This course is designed for students wishing to train for or gain employment in one of the building trades. This is a very popular programme and industry employers are seeking motivated students with sound literacy, numeracy and technical skills. The course includes using a variety of tools for the job, undertaking some basic construction projects and workplace health and safety.

Students will have an opportunity to embark on structured work experience to assist them in gaining hands-on experience in their specific area of interest.

  • CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
  • CPCCWHS2001 - Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry

Completion of these units will contribute to CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways if students choose to enrol in the full qualification either at Guilford Young College (RTO No. 1129) or any other Registered Training Organisation in the future.

Introduction to Engineering (Metalwork)

This course is designed for students wishing to develop skills in the area of Metal Trades (metal fabrication, welding, fitting and machining) and aims to equip students with knowledge and skills which will enhance their prospects of employment in an engineering or related working environment. 

Topics covered: 

  • Complete a range of welding tasks to enhance welding competency
  • Learn how to use a metal lathe to complete turned items for projects
  • Working safely in the metal working industry
  • Reading and interpreting drawings and sketches
  • Building basic metal work projects using a variety of hand, power tools and machinery.
  • Developing skills in the correct use of hand tool, measuring and marking out.

  • CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
  • MEMPE004  - Use fabrication equipment
  • AURVTW010 - Set up and use welding equipment

Completion of these units will contribute to MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways if students choose to enrol in the full qualification either at Guilford Young College (RTO No. 1129) or any other Registered Training Organisation in the future.
